Meet this years challenges for the Hack the Heat Climate Competition

Solutions for a Warming World

Teams of up to five members (solo participation is allowed) can choose one of four challenges and develop a solution before the conference on April 12, 2025.

  • Concept Description: Due April 10th, 2025. A form link will be shared with all registered teams to fill in their Concept Description (200 words) which is a summary of the problem, solution, and impact.

  • 3-Minute Pitch: Present your idea to judges on April 12th, explaining the solution, how it works, and feasibility. Present solutions in any format (posters, projects, presentations, code, 3D models). Project presentations will take place at GEMS Founders School, Dubai to a panel of judges.

Challenge 1: Future-Ready City

Imagine a city that balances sustainability, technology, and community well-being. Design a physical model, 3D prototype, or architectural sketch showcasing your vision of a future-ready city.

Your design should include smart transportation systems, renewable energy sources, urban gardens, and inclusive spaces for people of all abilities. Complement your model with a presentation explaining how your city addresses environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Challenge 2: Arctic Resilience: A Storytelling & Awareness Campaign

The Arctic is changing, but many people don’t realize its global impact. Design a storytelling campaign that highlights the voices of Arctic communities, wildlife experts, or climate scientists.

This could take the form of a documentary-style short film, a photo essay, or a school initiative. Incorporate real data and firsthand accounts to create an emotional connection with your audience. The goal is to raise awareness and encourage action, whether through policy advocacy, conservation efforts, or behavioral changes.

Challenge 3: The Sustainable
Startup Challenge

Many businesses today are shifting toward eco-conscious, ethical, and sustainable practices—now it’s your turn! Work in teams to develop a business idea that tackles a real-world sustainability challenge, whether it’s reducing waste, promoting ethical fashion, or making clean energy accessible.

Create a business plan, develop a prototype or marketing strategy, and pitch your idea to a panel of judges or potential investors in a Shark Tank-style competition. The best ideas should be scalable, innovative, and impactful, with a strong financial and social sustainability model.

Challenge 4: Smart Waste Sorting Meets Behavioral Science

People know recycling is important, yet waste sorting is often ignored. Instead of just relying on technology, use psychology and behavioral science to encourage better waste habits. Design a school or community-wide intervention—this could be a color-coded bin system, engaging signage, or a reward-based initiative that makes recycling fun and intuitive.

Back up your design with research on how visual cues, incentives, or gamification can shift human behavior
